LOCAL PROGRAM HIGHLIGHTS, 1990 to 2000

Regular annual LWV events such as voter registration drives, most candidates' forums, and legislature previews and wrap-ups are not shown, nor are the national and state study and action items which were concurrent with these local issues.

1990 - 91 Donna Herbst, President
Published a brochure about "Recycling" by Bonnie Borel-Donohue which was distributed to 6,000 households with their trash bags by the Boy Scouts.
Supported a proposed Charter amendment to have staggered 4-year terms for County Council members, based on our 1978 position.
A letter in support of open meetings was sent to the County Council.
1991 - 92 Donna Herbst, President, first half of year; moved to Washington, DC.
Ann Pendergrass, President for remainder of the year.
Held a public meeting on the OLE electric power line extension in the Jemez.
1992 - 93 Ann Pendergrass, President
Held a public meeting on the future uses of Fuller Lodge.
Held a public meeting on Los Alamos County Public Buildings and Redevelopment.
Sponsored a panel discussion on The Role of a Responsible Press in its Community.
1993 - 94 Ann Pendergrass, President
Published 1993 edition of "Who's in Charge?" (Lois Godfrey, ed.) distributed with county utility bills.
Held a public meeting on Affordable Housing in Los Alamos-"Is There Hope?"
Held a public forum, on the future of the present public library building, 9/29.
1994 - 95 Adele Hopkins, President
Sponsored an April "TV Turn-off Week" for children in elementary school classes
Arranged for participation of Los Alamos residents in the LWVUS videoconference on Health Care Reform, in the County Council Chamber.
Participated in meetings of the Community Futures Team.
Held a public meeting on "Building a Sustainable Community."
Held a pre-legislative workshop on "The Nitty Gritty of Effective Lobbying."
Distributed mail-in voter registration forms at the County Fair parade. Other members participated in the parade.
Arranged for John Foley's talk on "Ethics and Civility in Collective Decision Making," open to the public following our annual meeting.
1995 - 96 Mary Kidman, President
Held "Open" meetings at noon at the library on several current topics:
  Betty Lou Lebeda: County Utilities: Current Concerns
  Diane Albert: Planning and Zoning in Los Alamos
  Sid Singer: County Acquisition of the Water System from the DOE, and County Water Well Fields
  Chris Ortega: County Water System.
Participated in the County Fair Parade, with placards celebrating the 75th Anniversary of Women's Suffrage.
Celebrated the first Saturday Farmers' Market, honoring member Jessie Rudnick for the establishment of the first Farmers' Market, here, in Los Alamos, 25 years ago.
Produced a 1995 edition of "Who's in Charge?" distributed with county utility bills.
Held a public meeting on "The Path to a Sustainable Future," with speakers Tom Ribe and Stanley Euston. Dr. Jeanne Logsdon, UNM, later addressed the same topic at a lunchtime open meeting.
Kevin Fenner spoke to "The County's Comprehensive Plan" at an open meeting.
1996 - 97 Diane Albert, President
Participated in a PAC-8 "Talk of the Town" broadcast on Economic Development in Los Alamos.
Participated in a series of noontime Cross-Cultural, Community-Building meetings organized by Gloria Mirabal and John Foley.
Held a well-attended Land Transfer Forum in the Council Chambers, at the request of the DOE and the County.
Participated in the County Fair parade. Two of our placards advertised our biennial "Candidates' Forum."
Held an open meeting on Population and the Global Ecosystem by Kim Manley.
Participated in an electronic forum on "Tools for Drinking Water Protection."
1997 - 98 Elizabeth Best, President
Held a public meeting on "Waste Disposal & Recycling: The Natural Step." Developed a Working Group for Sustainable Communities," which held several meetings during the year.
Supported a Sierra Club talk by Sue Gorman on "Albuquerque's Sustainable Community."
Gave presentations in Los Alamos and Santa Fe on sustainability.
Held a public meeting on Campaign Finance Reform in New Mexico.
Produced a 1997 edition of "Who's in Charge?" distributed with July county utility bills.
Publicized the PBS special on "Affluenza."
Presented a forum on "Los Alamos Schools--Where Are They Headed?" This included presentations on site-based management and the "Educational Plan for Student Success, EPSS."
Held a public meeting on the proposed school bond issue.
Supported the Sierra Club public meeting on "Reducing Immigration Numbers."
1998 - 99 Sonya Sukalski, President
Held a joint public meeting with "New Mexico Citizens for Clean Air and Water" on the new NM Public Regulation Commission.
Cooperated with the Sierra Club on a public meeting about Mesa del Sol, the Albuquerque sustainable community development.
Held three "Citizen Advocacy" classes, one each on local, state, and national advocacy.
Participated in all of the "County Comprehensive Plan" meetings.
Participated in Vision 2020 meetings.
1999 - 2000 Sonya Sukalski, President
Produced a 1999 edition of "Who's in Charge?" (Kyle Wheeler, ed.), distributed with county utility bills.
Continued to participate in the Comprehensive Plan and Vision2020 meetings.
Co-sponsored a Bill Fruth seminar on the "Economy of Los Alamos" with the LA Commerce and Development Corp.
Participated in the LA Historical Society's celebration of Los Alamos' 50th year with a poster captioned, "What was the League of Women Voters Doing the Year You First Came to Los Alamos?", giving LWV highlights over the years. It won a $50 prize.
The Sustainability Committee under Elizabeth Best held a series of five public forums:
  • Lee Zink, UNM Economist "If Our Community Is Not Growing, Is It Dying?"
  • Joan Gibson, UNM Health Sci. "Your Health: Whose Responsibility?"
  • Juliet Schor, Harvard Economist, "The U.S. and Los Alamos: Overworked and Overspent?"
  • Richard Coughlin, UNM Sociologist, "Community: What Is It? What Sustains It?"
  • Panel discussion "Working Together to Survive" with speakers Kevin Holsapple, Director of the Los Alamos Commerce & Development Corp; Ware Hartwell, LANL's Environmental Sciences & Waste Division leader; Robert Trapp, Rio Grande Sun publisher of Española; moderated by Chris Dissinger, Los Alamos Monitor general manager.
